A stimulating chat …

with United Church Moderator Gary Paterson took place this week at St. James United. A diverse crowd from St. James and MCM gathered to exchange ideas with Moderator Paterson on everything from LGBTQ rights … to refugees … to the UCC position on religious fundamentalism … to the future of the United Church itself.

Merci Gary pour ta disponibilité, ton honnêteté, et ta chaleur. Bonne chance et au plaisir de te revoir bientôt.

I Love You, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do, I Do

Congratulations to MCM board member Geoff Duerden on his recent marriage to Lisa LeRoy.  

In lieu of wedding gifts, Geoff and Lisa ‘paid it forward’ by choosing two charities to receive tribute donations in their honour:  Maison de la Gare St-Louis  that works with street children in Senegal where Lisa and her dad Rod have been very active for several years, and Montreal City Mission.

Geoff and Lisa, your work for social justice along with your kindness and compassion are inspirational!  We are all lucky to have you both in our lives.  Best wishes as you begin this new chapter.

Toutes nos félicitations à Geoffrey Duerden, membre de notre conseil d’administration, et Lisa LeRoy pour leur tout récent mariage. 

Plutôt qu’opter pour des cadeaux de mariages traditionnels, Lisa et Geoff ont choisi d’honorer deux organismes humanitaires en suggérant à leurs invités de plutôt faire une contribution à la Maison de la Gare St-Louis qui vient en aide aux enfants de la rue au Sénégal, une organisation que Lisa et son père Rod soutiennent depuis plusieurs années, ou à la Mission communautaire de Montréal.

Geoff et Lisa, votre travail pour la justice sociale, ainsi que votre générosité et votre compassion, nous inspire! Nous sommes heureux de vous compter parmi nous.

A big success!!

Thanks to all of our intrepid riders and generous donors, Montreal City Mission raised over $10,000 during last Saturday’s Ride for Refuge. 

Spirits were high as we pedaled through wind and rain to raise money for MCM’s work with refugees, immigrant seniors and children from multi-cultural and special needs backgrounds. 

A hot meal awaited us upon our return to departure line, providing a chance to connect with our friends from church and community networks, commiserate about the weather and brag about doing 25k nevertheless!  

A special nod to our youngest rider, 2 year old Justin Evans Sewall who was oblivious to the weather in his little weather proof buggy!

And a special thanks to our 6 teams and their supporters. Please thank all of your donors on behalf of MCM.

This is the way we all make a difference, building an inclusive and welcoming community for each and everyone.

Your solidarity is heart-warming! And is changing the world!

Une belle réussite!

Un gros merci à tous nos courageux cyclistes et nos généreux donateurs! 

Grâce à vous, la Mission communautaire de Montréal a amassé plus de $10,000 samedi dernier lors de l’édition 2014 de Ride for Refuge. 

Le moral des troupes était bon malgré la pluie et le vent, et nous avons pédalé pour que se poursuive le travail de la MCM auprès des réfugiés, des aînés immigrants et des enfants provenant de divers milieux culturels ou ayant des besoins spéciaux. 

Un repas chaud nous attendait à notre retour à la ligne de départ, nous permettant d’échanger avec nos amis de la communauté écuménique et de nos réseaux communautaires, de nous plaindre de la température et de nous féliciter d’avoir pédaler 25k, rien de moins! 

Une mention spéciale pour notre plus jeune participant âgé de seulement 2 ans, Justin Evans Sewall installé confortablement dans sa poussette et ne se préoccupant pas du tout de la mauvaise température!

Tous nos remerciements à nos 6 équipes and leurs supporters. S’il-vous-plaît, au nom de la MCM, remerciez chaleureusement tous vos donateurs.

C’est ainsi que l’on peut faire une différence et bâtir une communauté accueillante pour tous.

Votre solidarité nous touche énormément! Et elle change le monde!

Kindness App 2 Soon Available in a Store Near You

Kudos to our two brilliant IT volunteers Kwaku and Meng who are taking time from their busy jobs at Now in Store inc., to help us create MCM My Kindness App version 2. 

We hope to be up and running on Androids and iPhones with a daily kindness quote and meditation timer before the end of the year.

Montreal City Mission's Camp Cosmos program offers amazing opportunities for youth to gain invaluable life experience and skills.

What a joy to welcome Bruno and his family to Canada in 2004 and then to welcome Bruno back 10 years later to Camp Cosmos as a shadow-in-training.

Ride for Refuge 2014

Friends!

Last year we had a ball pedalling under the beautiful autumn sky at Île-Bizard for the annual Ride for Refuge bike-a-thon.  And guess what? Not only did we have fun, but we managed to raise 8,000$ for three important MCM programs: Camp Cosmos, Just Solutions Legal Information Clinic, Seniors’ Mobile Legal Clinic.

This year, the Ride is taking place on October 4th, and we’re already getting in gear!  We need your help to make this Ride an even bigger success.

 So get involved with Ride for Refuge this fall and help us help others by:

L’année dernière, nous nous sommes éclatés sous un magnifique ciel d’automne à l’Île-Bizard lors du cyclo-défi annuel Ride for Refuge. Et devinez quoi? You Say Goodbye, I Say Hello, Hello Hello

Andrea Dawes

MCM continues its period of transition with the departure  last month of Andrea Dawes, co-coordinator of the Just Solutions Clinic. Andrea will be moving with her husband Liam to Australia in July.

Andrea – your dynamic and cheerful presence is already missed.  In addition to the devotion and passion with which you served the men and women at Just Solutions, you also found time to organize bike rides, benefit suppers and charity ping pong tournaments!  We will try to emulate your amazing spirit that has left a lasting imprint on your colleagues and on the organization. We wish you all the best ‘down under’ and look forward to pictures and stories of your adventures!

We welcome Me Mylène Barrière as new coordinator of Just Solutions and Me Marie-Pier Leduc as new coordinator of the Seniors’ Mobile Legal Clinic. Both Mylène and Marie-Pier bring a wealth of knowledge and experience, as well as a strong commitment to creating an inclusive society where all receive the assistance and encouragement they require to live with dignity.
