Go Habs Go

A group of kids from Camp Cosmos had the thrill of their lives when they were invited to view last Monday’s game between the Montreal Canadians and the Vancouver Canucks at the Bell Centre.
But there’s more! They viewed the game from the box of Brandon Prust and his charming partner, popular Quebec television personality Maripier Morin. Brandon and Maripier hung out with the kids, signing their new Canadians’ caps and viewing the game together.
And what a game – the Canadians’ came back from a disadvantage to win 4-3! And there’s more!! Réjean Houle and Geoff Molson also dropped by the box for a visit!
A heartfelt thanks to Brandon and Maripier as well as to the Canadians Children’s Foundation whose support makes the camp possible every year.
A final tip of the hockey cap to our volunteer chaperons, Angélique, Edouardo and Victor.

Proud of Grandpa

Photo by Vincenzo D'Alto for The Gazette

Camp Cosmos director Valentina Solkin has every reason to be proud of her 91 year old grand-father Wolf William Solkin.

Mr. Solkin, a Second World War Veteran, is the tech savvy editor of the Veteran’s Voice at Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue Hospital , keeping veterans and the larger community informed.

“This place is a paradise,” said Solkin. “There’s a culture in place that emphasizes respect, consideration and compassion. We don’t want to lose that.”

Hmm… sounds like the values that motivate his grand-daughter. Valentina – we are proud of you!!

A Lovely Evening for Camp Cosmos

On a beautiful spring evening in late April, a small group of people gathered for an intimate night of music at the House of Friendship on Duluth in support of Camp Cosmos.

The concert opened with singer-songwriter Eliza Moore, whose original compositions (as well as a cover or two) set the mood of warmth, honesty, openness, and love that defined the evening.

Former camp counsellor and classically-trained pianist Stefano Degano then played a couple of his favourite songs, giving heartfelt and educative introductions to each piece.

The concert was closed by Egyptian musician Shams Al-Habib – accompanied at times by her two delightful and talented young sons – who maintained the same warmth and love of the evening.

Thank you so much to the musicians, to the concert-goers, and to those who supported the cause even though they could not make it to the concert!

Fees at Camp Cosmos are minimal and even waived for those families who cannot afford any cost. So we rely on our faithful donors to create summer magic along with opportunities for sports, gardening, a mini workshop on human rights for kids and so much more.

Inclusion

Le texte français suit

More important than our need to be loved is our need to belong.
- Jean Vanier

Billy's mom looked crestfallen when I told her I would have to put Billy on a waiting list. That one look translated years of refusals: I'm sorry; we can't help you; we don't have the staff to accommodate your son; etc etc.

I felt terrible to be joining my voice to that negative chorus and wanted desperately to be able to say - no problem, he has a place this summer at Camp Cosmos.

But with cutbacks to our shadow* grants, I could not make false promises. Last year Camp Cosmos welcomed 45 children, 6 of whom had special needs, into our sharing circle of fun and learning. All the children laughed, played, and became friends together. This year, however, we only have grant money to welcome 3 children with special needs. Billy is not one of them.

And so I’m turning to you, dear friends with a special request for a special program. And that request is to make a special donation to our shadow program this summer. All donations - no matter what the size - will help us reach our goal of hiring 2 more shadows.

With your help, we hope to raise $7200 through this shadow campaign for Camp Cosmos 2012.

Please help us help a child belong this summer.
