Bruno: Shadow-In-Training

Montreal City Mission's Camp Cosmos program offers amazing opportunities for youth to gain invaluable life experience and skills.

What a joy to welcome Bruno and his family to Canada in 2004 and then to welcome Bruno back 10 years later to Camp Cosmos as a shadow-in-training.

You Say Goodbye, I Say Hello, Hello Hello

Andrea Dawes

MCM continues its period of transition with the departure  last month of Andrea Dawes, co-coordinator of the Just Solutions ClinicAndrea will be moving with her husband Liam to Australia in July.

Andrea with a client at Just Solutions

Andrea – your dynamic and cheerful presence is already missed.  In addition to the devotion and passion with which you served the men and women at Just Solutions, you also found time to organize bike rides, benefit suppers and charity ping pong tournaments!  We will try to emulate your amazing spirit that has left a lasting imprint on your colleagues and on the organization. We wish you all the best ‘down under’ and look forward to pictures and stories of your adventures!

Mylène, Danny, Marie-Pier and Talia

And so a new chapter begins.

We welcome Me Mylène Barrière as new coordinator of Just Solutions and Me Marie-Pier Leduc as new coordinator of the Seniors’ Mobile Legal Clinic. Both Mylène and Marie-Pier bring a wealth of knowledge and experience, as well as a strong commitment to creating an inclusive society where all receive the assistance and encouragement they require to live with dignity.

Nous souhaitons la bienvenue également à Danny Nguyen, étudiant en droit et bénévole, et Talia Joundi, stagiaire en droit.

Bonne chance et bienvenue à bord à tous et chacun!

Me Mylène Barrière

"C'est avec joie et fierté que j'intègre l'équipe de la Clinique des solutions justes/ MCM, dont l'engagement pour la défense des droits des plus vulnérables et pour la justice sociale m'inspire!"

Mylène Barrière

Me Marie-Pier Leduc on Mount Kilimanjaro

"I feel privileged to be part of MCM's team; as Coordinator of the Seniors Clinic, I have a lot of interesting and challenging projects ahead, and I'm very excited to work with such dedicated and passionate people."

Marie-Pier Leduc

Talia Joundi

“Taking part in the work of MCM and Just Solutions is an important opportunity for me as a law student; it is a chance to be active in the support network for individuals and families with precarious immigration status in a real way. Recently, I thanked Rick (supervising lawyer) for taking the time to look over my writing, he gave me an amused look and said: “of course; we're a team here”. It's both the importance of the work, and the attitude of the team at Just Solutions that have me feeling so grateful to be here for the summer.”

Talia Joundi

Danny Nguyen

“I'm very happy to be volunteering at the Just Solutions Clinics where I can use the skills I have acquired in university to help people in a precarious status. I'm also very glad to be surrounded by a great team of workers and volunteers who share the same passion of making a difference in the community.”

Kudos Rick!

Rick Goldman with family members

Congratulations to MCM supervising lawyer Rick Goldman on receiving a Doctorate Honoris Causa from the United Theological College for his long and faithful career serving Montreal’s most vulnerable citizens. Rick’s work, in particular with refugees and those with a precarious immigration status, has gained him respect and admiration in the community milieu, the church, academia, and the legal field, both in Quebec and Canada wide.

Previous to this honour, Rick was the recipient of the Médaille St-Yves from the Quebec Pro Bono Association, awarded at the annual meeting of the  Quebec Bar in 2013.

Rick, we are proud and thankful to call you our colleague and our friend. May your work continue for many more years. Mazel Tov!

UTC Principal Phil Joudrey, Rick, Paula & Etienne (Class 2014)

Mazel Tov!

The Dreams in His Heart

It was the crack of dawn, when the Divine cradles our dreams one last time before entrusting them to the day. Birds were chirping, and the first clatters of a food vendor echoed down the narrow street.

Kris broke an egg over the plantain he was frying up for breakfast, his thoughts already racing ahead to his morning roster of patients. He had studied medicine in Russia and done research in the US before returning to his home in western Africa. Like his father and brother before him, he was now a doctor and felt proud to be making his own contribution.

All of a sudden a chorus of violent knocks snapped him out of his reverie. Who could that be at such an early hour? Kris peeped out a window to see a woman’s feet in sandals flanked on either side by a pair of army boots. Somewhat apprehensive, and still puzzled, he gingerly opened the front door. In that split second, his life would change.

Two policemen barged in, threw him to the ground, and handcuffed him, while the woman screamed hysterically that he was an evil spirit poisoning her son. Kris’s heart sank as he realized in a flash what this was all about. The woman’s s son was his lover, still asleep in the bedroom where Kris had left him only a few minutes earlier. Dragged to his feet, Kris was pushed out the door, past gawking neighbours, and thrown into the paddy wagon—his dignity and his life in tatters.

The standard punishment for the “crime” of homosexuality in his country is a five-year prison sentence, which many do not survive. His partner would be spared that fate by the top military brass in his family, but Kris had no such protection. His only option was to flee.

Shortly after his arrest he contracted malaria in prison and was sent to a hospital. It was there late one night that a cousin helped him sneak past a dozing security guard and smuggled him to a neighbouring city. A few days later, he was on a plane headed for Canada.

In Montreal, Kris wound up in a homeless shelter, struggling to adapt to a new culture and figure out his next steps. A deeply spiritual man, he knew he needed a community of faith. Providence led him to the steps of St. James United Church. There he connected with Montreal City Mission where he obtained housing and legal counsel for his refugee claim, and became a volunteer.

One day he was asked by a church member to help the Believe Group organize for the annual AIDS march. Because Believe is a group for LGBTQ support (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transgender, queer) he thought it must be a clandestine activity. He could barely contain his surprise and delight when the pastor and the entire congregation gathered on the church square one Sunday morning, singing songs to encourage the marchers and distributing “free hugs.” Kris had found a home.

Kris’s refugee claim was accepted, and he became a permanent resident in October 2013. Today he is working around the clock to raise money for a plane ticket to Russia to retrieve his medical diploma. Despite a hectic schedule, he also finds time to continue his volunteer work and raise awareness on the plight of the international LGBTQ community.

“I was lucky to have the money to run fast and far,” he says. “Most in my situation can only hope to get to a neighbouring country and assume a new identity.... Many commit suicide.”

Kris cradles two dreams in his heart—to become a doctor in Canada and to improve conditions for oppressed sexual minorities. “The United Church has come a long, long way,” he says. “We need to look around us now and extend the hand of solidarity to our brothers and sisters who are still living in fear and in mortal danger.”

Good Luck Yolaine!

Yolaine (on the right) with colleagues Andrea Dawes and Rick Goldman

Our cherished colleague, Me Yolaine Williams, has left MCM to work at the Human Rights Commission.
Though very sad to see her go, we wish Yolaine all the best in this new chapter of her career.

Yolaine first came to MCM six years ago as a student, and then returned to work at our Just Solutions Legal Info and Accompaniment Clinic. Her dedication, professionalism and compassion for the people we serve, have always been an example for her students and colleagues alike.

In addition to a heavy case load, Yolaine also played an active role in our community networks, most notably in the newly formed  coalition of non profit legal clinics, and in efforts to ensure non status children the right to attend school.

Yolaine personifies the best in her profession as well as the MCM values of compassion, hospitality and justice. We have no doubt that she will continue to make an important contribution to the field of law, human rights and access to justice.

Yolaine - ce n'est pas adieu - ce n'est qu'un au revoir. Bonne chance!

Go! Habs! Go!

That’s the refrain that young Mathis has been chanting ever since he realized the dream of his life – to attend a hockey match last December.

Thanks to the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation, Mathis along with 6 other youngsters, were invited as VIP guests to the Bell Center, and given supper as they cheered on the Habs.
Mathis’ mother told us that after the game he slept with his Canadian’s name label under his pillow!

Many thanks to Sylvie Nadeau, of the Montreal Canadiens Children’s Foundation, for giving these young kids an experience of a lifetime.

Go! Habs! Go!
